Sugar - the Silent Killer.
You've heard that sugar is bad for you, but it can't be THAT bad, right? “I don't eat that much”, you think, “just a little cookie in the afternoon, or a diet soda every few days.” You may think that salt or fat are worse for you.
Well, surprise! The average American eats an average of 150 lbs. of sugar per year! That's about 500 extra calories per day from sugar, or what you'd eat if you wanted to gain a pound a week. Even if you're super-above average, and eat half that, you're eating 75 lbs. per year.
Where is this all hiding, and what's it doing to your health?
Studies show that eating sugar is directly related to the incidence of disease. Illnesses such as high cholesterol, excess weight, high blood pressure, diabetes, as well as gut issues, thyroid issues, exhaustion, sleeplessness, foggy thinking, depression, erectile dysfunction, sex drive and more can all be a result of our passion for the sweet stuff.
How does sugar affect our health?
- Once eaten, sugar enters the bloodstream, causing damage to the blood vessels and upping the risk of erectile dysfunction in men and sexual arousal disorder in women.
- Sugar inflames the linings of blood vessels, like the arteries to the heart, increasing risk of heart disease and stroke. Move over salt and hypertension. Sugar is just as much of a silent killer.
- Sugar promotes belly fat. Specifically fructose-laden beverages are one possible cause.
- Sugar may be linked to cancer production and may affect cancer survival. Studies are showing significant links.
- The brain suffers with diets full of processed and sugar-laden foods, as it rewires the pathways, increasing the risk of depression by 58%.
- Joints suffer as inflammatory cytokines are pumped into the bloodstream causing arthritis to flare up.
- Kidneys have a delicate filtration system that gets overloaded by sugar. Kidney failure is a concern for diabetics.
- Sugar is food for the bad bacteria, causing to to grow uncontrolled throughout your digestive system, affecting everything from your teeth (cavities, abscesses) to your colon (IBS, IBD, Leaky Gut and more).
There are many more reasons to eliminate added sugars from our diets. Whole books are devoted to the topic. It may sound like an unreachable goal to lose the sugar in your life, but there IS delicious hope.
